Tour Overview
TUNIS • CARTHAGE • SIDI BOU SAID • DOUGGA • ZAGHOUAN • KAIROUAN • MAKTAR • EL DJEM • SOUSSE • HAMMAMET
Home to the legendary Hannibal and capital of one of the ancient world’s greatest empires, Carthage once vied with Rome for control of the Mediterranean. Three titanic struggles between these mighty empires ultimately laid Carthage low. They led to the transformation of what is now modern Tunisia into one of the wealthiest provinces of the Roman Empire. Then, as the ancient world entered its twilight years, the armies of Arabia arrived, bringing a new, vibrant and exotic culture to North Africa.
Carthage and Roman Africa is a privately chauffeured and guided tour that will explore a scenic land swathed in olive trees and discover a country that combines easy ways with oriental exoticism. Showcasing some of the most spectacular cultural treasures of the Mediterranean, classical highlights will include Dougga’s stunning remains, El Djem’s virtually complete amphitheatre, and the magnificent mosaics in the Bardo Museum.
The ancient world is combined with walks through the intoxicating streets of the walled medieval medinas of Tunis and holy Kairouan – Islam’s fourth holiest site – and a day to relax by the sea in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Sousse.

Day 2 Bardo, Tunis, Carthage

Start the day at Tunis’ famed Bardo Museum, where a world-class collection of brilliantly executed Roman mosaics and sculptures is displayed. Next, move on to the thronging souqs and grand monuments inside Tunis’s walled medina for an immersion into North Africa. After lunch in a beautiful old mansion, visit the ruins of ancient Carthage.
Day 3 Bulla Regia and Dougga

Some of the greatest treasures of the Roman world lie inland from Tunis in what was the ancient province (and former kingdom) of Numidia. First, visit Bulla Regia, once the capital of the 2nd-century Numidian king Micipsa, and see the well-preserved Roman underground villas. Then continue to the nearby UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dougga, and explore what are arguably the finest Roman ruins in Tunisia.
Day 4 Thuburbo Majus, Zaghouan, Arrive Kairouan

Today, visit Thuburbo Majus – a fine example of a provincial Roman African city and the Temple of the Waters at Zaghouan. Next, continue to Kairouan, a city revered as the fourth holiest city in the Muslim world. This afternoon, there will be a walking tour of Kairouan’s historic souqs and Medina.
Day 5 Kairouan, Maktar

Visit Kairouan’s fortress-like Great Mosque of Obka with its distinctive square minaret, then drive into the mountains to see the spectacularly located Roman ruins at Maktar (ancient Mactaris).
Day 6 El Djem, Sousse, arrive Hammamet

Drive to El Djem to see the magnificent Roman amphitheatre – a structure that is in a better state of preservation than the Colosseum in Rome. Next, see the fine mosaics in El Djem’s museum before continuing to the coastal city of Sousse, a UNESCO World Heritage town noted for its impressive walled medina. This afternoon, explore Sousse and then drive up the coast to Hammamet.
Day 7 Hammamet

Today is at leisure in Hammamet to relax and enjoy your hotel’s facilities. Alternatively, you may wish to take a taxi into town for a meal and explore the beautiful whitewashed medina, visit the Villa Sebastian cultural centre, and wander around the ruins of Roman Pupput.
Day 8 Farewell to Tunisia

Transfer to Tunis International Airport.
