Luxury Tunisia Holiday is a privately guided journey based at some of the country’s finest hotels that combines the spectacular Roman ruins and medinas of northern Tunisia with a dramatic 4WD Saharan adventure in the south. This luxury holiday in Tunisia reveals a country of vivid contrasts — from imposing ancient monuments to endless desert vistas, flourishing palm oases, and distinctive Berber architecture.

Beginning in Tunis, explore one of North Africa’s most evocative capitals, where the winding medina, the acclaimed Bardo Museum, and the ruins of Carthage provide an engaging introduction to the country’s rich cultural heritage. Inland, the extraordinary Roman site of Dougga and the charming village of Sidi Bou Said further highlight Tunisia’s layered history and architectural beauty.

From the Mediterranean coast, continue south by air to the island of Djerba, where whitewashed villages, living traditions, and the storied El Ghriba synagogue offer a gentle introduction to southern Tunisia. Travelling inland, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, revealing the troglodyte homes of Matmata, the Berber settlements of the Dahar region, and the gateway town of Douz on the edge of the Sahara.

In the desert, enjoy a truly memorable Sahara experience as you venture into the Grand Erg Oriental on a privately guided 4WD adventure. Here, vast rolling dunes and remote landscapes create a striking sense of scale and solitude. Continue across the immense salt flats of the Chott el Djerid to Tozeur, an elegant oasis town known for its palm groves, distinctive architecture, and proximity to remarkable desert scenery, including Ong Jemel and the oasis of Nefta.

Returning north via Gafsa and the grand Roman amphitheatre at El Djem — one of the best-preserved in the Roman world — your journey concludes in Tunis with time at leisure. Throughout, stay in carefully selected luxury accommodation and enjoy seamless private transfers and expert guiding. Blending cultural discovery, desert adventure, and understated luxury, this tailor-made Tunisia itinerary offers an effortless and richly rewarding exploration of the country’s most captivating regions.

Meet your driver and set off on a full-day 4WD Saharan adventure to discover the magnificent landscape of Tembaine (a three-hour off-road drive south of Douz) where you will have lunch at the evocatively named ‘Camp Mars’. Located on the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, Tembaine is surrounded by vast expanses of golden sand dunes. The site is marked by two prominent rocky outcrops rising from the desert floor, creating a stunning contrast with the surrounding dunes. Once an important stop on the historic trans-Saharan caravan route, Tembaine is also a place of spiritual significance for local tribes who sometimes refer to it as the “Gate of the Sahara.” Return to Douz in the late afternoon.

Day 6 Chott el Djerid, Old Tozeur & Palmerie

Leaving Douz, traverse the vast expanse of the Chott el Djerid salt pans, the largest of its kind in the Sahara Desert. Continue to Tozeur, once one of the great desert gateways to Sub-Saharan Africa and retaining a unique charm. Take an interesting walk through the narrow alleyways of Tozeur’s old Ouled Hadef quarter and explore the town’s expansive oasis, the Palmerie, best seen on a relaxing horse and cart ride. Finally, check into your luxury hotel, where the rest of the day is free.

At the heart of the town is the Corbeille (basket), a fertile and sunken palm oasis that is best appreciated from the main road above it. Later, journey north across the desert sands to watch the sunset over the dunes. En route, pass Ong Jemel (an enormous rock resembling a camel), fossilised dunes, and a virtually intact film set used in two Star Wars movies.

Leaving the desert, the drive today will take you via Gafsa and El Djem. In Gafsa, visit the ancient Roman Pools (Piscines Romaines) and the small but interesting Archaeology Museum.
