The vast rippling sands of the Grand Erg Oriental (or Eastern Sand Sea) engulf southern Tunisia and offer the visitor an immersion into a world where, until very recently, the camel and desert nomad reigned supreme.

Tunisia has some of the most magnificent Roman monuments in the world. Notable sites are the amphitheatre of El Djem, Dougga’s Capitol temple, and Mactar’s Arch of Trajan, while at Carthage are the remains of one of the ancient world’s greatest cities.

A night under the stars in the Sahara is magical. It offers an opportunity to fully experience the romantic desert landscapes used for films such as The English Patient and Star Wars.

The finest museum of its kind in North Africa, Tunis’ Bardo Museum is one of the great highlights of Tunisia, offering a world-class collection of brilliantly executed Roman mosaics collected from sites across the country.

Ancient Thugga (Dougga) is arguably the finest Roman site in Tunisia and has a beautiful, rugged rural location. The remarkably well-preserved Capitoline Temple is not to be missed!

The magnificent amphitheatre at El Djem (ancient Thysdrus) once had a capacity of 30,000 spectators and massive outer walls rising to three storeys. It is in a better state of preservation than the Coliseum in Rome.

The Mountain Oases of Chebika, Mides and Tamerza offer some of the most dramatic scenery in southern Tunisia, with date palms surviving in rocky clefts and small streams and waterfalls, creating an Eden-like paradise amongst the arid mountains.

Tunisia has a glorious Mediterranean coastline and some beautiful golden sandy beaches. Hammamet, Sousse, and the island of Djerba’s coastal resorts have the best accommodation.

Sidi Bou Said is considered among Tunisia’s most picturesque villages, where whitewashed buildings with blue and green painted doors overflow with cascades of jasmine and bougainvillaea.

The fortified Berber settlements known as Ksour are so out of this world that some were chosen as the setting for Luke Skywalker’s home planet in the Star Wars films.

Kairouan is revered as the fourth most important holy city in the Muslim world. The town is Tunisia’s spiritual centre and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

With its old Arab-walled town, Tunis is one of the great historic cities of North Africa. In the souqs, goods, including gold, leather, carpets, and perfumes, are displayed under covered arches amidst an intoxicating oriental atmosphere.
