Arguably the most impressive monastery-fortress in Bhutan, Punakha Dzong, commands an imposing position at the confluence of the country’s two major rivers, the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu.

On a clear day, the views of Mt. Jomolhari from the top of the 3,988m Cheli La are spectacular. The mountain pass is reached via Bhutan’s highest drivable road.

This commanding 17th-century monastery fortress was once the seat of power over central and eastern Bhutan. Today it houses one of the best museums in Bhutan.

So much more than a soak in a tub, a hot stone bath is the quintessential Bhutanese experience. Considered to be a form of traditional Bhutanese medicine, preparing the bath is a ritual in itself. Hotels like Uma Paro turn a traditional bath into a luxury experience.
