Ksar Ouled Debbab is a traditional fortified granary that has been converted into an eye-catching ‘hotel de charme’. Sitting on a low hill in the heart of southern Tunisia’s Tataouine region, this architectural gem is a fine example of a Berber heritage. It is an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding ksour (fortified granaries) that are the region’s main draw.
Within, Ksar Ouled Debbab looks like a Star Wars film set and offers overnight visitors a unique southern Tunisian experience. The rustic guest accommodation resembles cave dwellings, comprising nineteen bedrooms and two simply furnished suites colorfully decorated in traditional Berber style. Each ensuite room has a different layout, but all have a sitting area leading to a bedroom and air-conditioning.
In addition to a museum of Islamic and Berber heritage, Ksar Ouled Debbab has a restaurant serving Tunisian cuisine and a terrace offering panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
