Underground troglodytic house
Au Trait d’Union Tijma is an authentic underground troglodytic house located amongst the arid valleys of the Jebel Dahar, a little to the north of the well-known troglodyte village of Matmata. Accommodation at this five-bedroom guesthouse is simple, but a stay here is a unique experience that is made all the more memorable by the friendly owner and his assistant, as well as the delicious meals.
From ground level, there is almost no hint of the Au Trait d’Union Tijma’s existence. The property is approached by a tunnel (skiffa) dug into the embankment (tabia) that surrounds the hollowed-out crater courtyard that is three metres below ground. The whitewashed sides of the crater are pierced by the cave-like guestrooms and niches used for storage.
Each bedroom has its own unique form and is equipped with a comfortable bed, electricity, nightstands and a colourful local rug. Guests should be aware that the private bathrooms are located a short walk away from their rooms and that Wi-Fi, television, heating and windows are not present.
The troglodytic homes were built to regulate the extremes of temperature, and at most times of the year, you’ll find a very comfortable temperature, but during the short winter, the unheated rooms can feel cold, and you will appreciate the extra blankets provided.
Au Trait d’Union Tijma is well located for exploring the surrounding Berber villages.
