Gokarna

Gokarna is a charming coastal town located south of Goa that is ideal for those seeking to combine secluded beaches with cultural immersion. Steeped in mythology, Gokarna is one of the seven important Hindu pilgrimage centres. But it is now primarily known for its pristine beaches, including Om Beach, Kudle Beach, Half Moon Beach, and Paradise Beach.

Of these, Paradise Beach is a hidden gem. A short, steep hike (about 10 minutes) from the charming boutique-style Kahani Paradise Estate will lead you directly to this secluded, golden-sandy beach. Om Beach, named for its striking resemblance to the sacred Hindu symbol ‘Om’, is about 20 minutes by car from Kahani Paradise and is ideal for sunset walks. Half Moon Beach is a secluded lagoon between Om Beach and Paradise Beach. It is only accessible by boat or a 20-minute hike from Kahani Paradise. Kudle Beach lies further west of Om Beach and has a relaxed vibe, but swimming is not recommended here due to strong currents.

Beyond the beaches, guests can meander through sleepy Gokarna town and visit the 4th-century Mahabaleshwar Temple (non-Hindus can explore the outer precincts, but the sanctum-sanctorum is off-limits) or stroll through the flea market. History enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the 16th-century Mirjan Fort (about 1 hour by car from Kahani Paradise). Built by Rani Chennabhairadevi, affectionately called the ‘Spice Queen’ for her role in the spice trade, this fort served as a strategic bastion for various rulers, including the Vijayanagara Empire and, later, the British. The fort’s ruins showcase a blend of Hindu and Islamic styles of architecture, while the watchtowers and secret passageways provide a glimpse into its storied past.

Other experiences on offer at Gokarna include a boat ride with friendly local fishermen to explore the peninsula’s rugged seascape, discovering hidden coves and red-sand beaches along the way, guided nature walks and visiting a local village nearby where you can watch locals play cricket on the beach in the late afternoons.
