El Aurassi Hotel

Perched high above the Bay of Algiers, El Aurassi Hotel has been one of the capital’s best-known landmarks since it opened in 1975. Set on a hillside just above the city centre, it enjoys sweeping views across the Mediterranean and is well placed for exploring the Casbah, the French colonial quarter and Algiers’ principal museums and cultural attractions.

Designed by Italian architect Luigi Moretti, El Aurassi has welcomed heads of state and diplomats over the decades and remains one of Algeria’s most established hotels. Although modernised over the years, the building retains a sense of 1970s grandeur, while landscaped gardens, spacious public areas and panoramic terraces give the hotel a distinctly Algerian character.

The hotel has a wide choice of air-conditioned rooms and suites, many with private balconies overlooking the bay. Interiors are contemporary and comfortably furnished, with neutral colours and plenty of natural light. An outdoor swimming pool is set among mature gardens, along with a fitness centre, sauna, and traditional hammam.

Several restaurants offer Algerian and international cuisine. Traditional specialities are served at El Daqdaq, while Fibonacci specialises in Italian dishes and Les Tagarins offers Mediterranean fare. The hotel also has a tea saloon, a 24-hour coffee shop and the Seventy-Five terrace lounge, where guests can enjoy a drink overlooking the city.

With its elevated position, extensive facilities and easy access to Algiers’ principal sights, El Aurassi makes a comfortable base for exploring the capital, but guests shouldn’t expect services to meet international five-star standards
