Gwalior

Straddling central and northern India, Gwalior is a magical destination rich with cultural heritage. Once home to powerful Rajput dynasties, the city proudly bears the legacy of these kingdoms through its wealth of monuments, temples and fortresses. Commanding a spectacular view of the city, the majestic 8th century Gwalior Fort once had a reputation of being India’s most invincible fort, which inspired Babur to describe it as the pearl amongst the ‘fortresses of Hind’.

The sandstone walls of the fort have preserved over 800 years of regal history and impressive architecture. The Man Mandir Palace boasts intricate stone carvings and sculptures among India’s finest, although its most distinctive feature is the turquoise tiles adorning it. Built by the Tomar ruler, Maharaja Man Singh, in the 15th century, it stands as a testament to Gwalior’s regal heritage and architectural brilliance.

Built in the 9th century, Teli Ka Mandir is an ornate towering structure within the fort that showcases the Dravidian style. Its unique design melds North and South Indian influences, adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. Other important sights include the fascinating rock-cut sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras and the Sas-Bahu temples, twin temples of the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law dedicated to Vishnu and Shiva.

Gwalior is midway between Agra and Orchha, connecting North and Central India and within easy driving distance of Rajasthan’s forts and palaces.
