Maniumpathy

Steeped in history, Maniumpathy, with its magnificent grand entrance, pillared terraces and Victorian-style architecture, is one of the finest boutique hotels in Colombo and is located in the heart of the city.

Originally built in 1906, this stately manor house was home to five generations of the accomplished Hallock family before its most recent owners transformed it into a stylish boutique retreat.

Built around a tranquil courtyard, Maniumpathy combines colonial elegance with modern comforts and offers accommodation in eight individually designed rooms beautifully decorated with period-style furniture and local artefacts and named after family matriarchs. Whilst the ground floor rooms either have a small private garden or open out onto the central courtyard, the upper floor rooms share a balcony that overlooks the courtyard and the pool.

For those who wish to upgrade, the luxuriously appointed master suite comes with a private lounge and a small garden and is tastefully designed to pay tribute to the grand matriarch of the family. For families, there is a family suite, which features a mezzanine floor that can be used to accommodate an extra twin bed.

At Maniumpathy, treat yourself to a selection of international cuisine and traditional Sri Lankan cuisine at The Nandi, which offers al-fresco dining and is set in the house’s courtyard. For a more formal dining experience, head to The Grand Ebony Room, which is set within the house. Other facilities include a sitting room with a small library and a small outdoor pool. This small boutique hotel, which is a sister property to the award-winning The Kandy House and the charming Taylors Hill near Kandy, has been designed to recreate the atmosphere of a home away from home and hence doesn’t offer much in terms of leisure facilities.

Maniumpathy’s central location though makes it a convenient base to discover Colombo’s main sights, whilst bars, cafés, and art galleries are only a short stroll or tuk-tuk ride away.
