Ganja

Ganja is one of Azerbaijan’s oldest and most historically significant cities with origins dating back to the 7th century. Located in the western part of the country, it flourished for centuries as an important trading hub and has long played an influential role in Azerbaijan’s cultural and intellectual life. In 1918, Ganja briefly even served as the temporary capital of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic – the first secular and democratic state in the Islamic world.

Today, traces of Ganja’s illustrious past can still be seen throughout the city, where old-world bathhouses, elegant mosques, and striking mausoleums dating from the Ganja Khanate and the Russian Empire stand side by side. Literature lovers should not miss the tomb of the celebrated 12th-century Persian poet, Nizami Ganjavi, who was born in the city. Another architectural highlight is the 17th-century Shah Abbas Mosque, a striking monument admired for its harmonious proportions and refined brickwork – a fine example of classical Azerbaijani design and architecture.

Ganja also serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding region and the dramatic landscapes of the western Caucasus. A scenic 50-minute drive south will bring you to the pristine waters of Lake Goygol, a stunningly beautiful Alpine lake surrounded by dense forests, where you can enjoy peaceful walks right along the water’s edge.

For a completely unique regional experience, a short drive southeast from Ganja brings you to the spa town of Naftalan, renowned for its therapeutic crude oil baths. Long associated with traditional healing treatments, the town has attracted visitors for generations seeking the reputed restorative properties of its mineral-rich oil.
