Galle
The UNESCO World Heritage town of Galle, located at the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka, is an ancient town with a fascinating maritime history. Walk around the ramparts for a fascinating overview of the quaint walled town with its maze of narrow streets, a fine collection of buildings, and diverse architectural styles dating back centuries.
Admire the ancient churches, the lighthouse, and the great warehouse (presently housing the National Maritime Museum). Then, continue to one of the street side cafes to experience Sri Lankan street food. The 17th-century Dutch fort constructed by the Portuguese is the best-preserved fort in Sri Lanka and is perched on a promontory.
Galle is also an excellent gateway to some of the secluded, laid-back beaches and fishing villages (including Thalpe) that lie to the south and offer chic, boutique hotels. Galle’s palm-fringed coastline, with its upmarket beach hotel and boutique hotels within the fort itself, is one of the most developed areas in Sri Lanka. Relatively easy access to Colombo International Airport allows visitors to begin their holiday in Galle for a slow and gentle introduction to Sri Lanka or finish in style before flying home.
