Annaba & North East Algeria

The north-east of Algeria combines a Mediterranean coastline with fertile plains, forested hills and some of the country’s most important archaeological sites. Centred on the port city of Annaba, the region traces the history of Numidian kings, Roman North Africa and early Christianity, with ancient sites scattered across its coastal and inland landscapes.

Annaba stands on the site of ancient Hippo Regius, one of Roman North Africa’s foremost cities and later the episcopal seat of St Augustine, one of Christianity’s most influential theologians. Today, visitors can explore the extensive archaeological site, where Roman villas, baths, mosaics and the remains of an early Christian basilica provide a glimpse of the city’s ancient past. Above the ruins, the 19th-century Basilica of Saint Augustine commands sweeping views across the Mediterranean, while the city’s broad seafront promenade, bustling harbour and lively cafés give modern Annaba an easy-going coastal charm.

Heading inland, the fertile plains and rolling hills lead to further reminders of Algeria’s ancient past. Souk Ahras, the birthplace of St Augustine and the site of ancient Thagaste, preserves traces of its Roman heritage. Nearby Khemissa is home to a well-preserved archaeological site, where its forum, temples, triumphal arch and theatre offer a glimpse of life in a Roman provincial town.

Nearby Guelma, once the prosperous Roman settlement of Calama, is home to a reconstructed Roman theatre, together with thermal baths, mosaics and an archaeological museum that illustrate the importance of this fertile inland region in antiquity. Close by stands the Mausoleum of Masinissa, the monumental tomb traditionally associated with the celebrated Numidian king whose alliance with Rome helped shape the course of North African history during the Punic Wars.

Combining Annaba’s coastal heritage with the Roman and Numidian sites scattered across its hinterland, north-east Algeria offers a fascinating journey through more than two millennia of history. Still relatively little visited, the region is particularly rewarding for travellers interested in archaeology and looking to explore beyond Algeria’s better-known destinations.
