Former royal palace with character
Vijay Vilas Palace is a simple, character-rich homestay that was once the country retreat of the Palitana royal family. Originally built in 1906, Vijay Vilas Palace is set amongst six acres of mature gardens and offers panoramic views of the sacred Shatrunjaya Hill. Whilst Vijay Vilas Palace has been soulfully converted into a heritage homestay, part of this old mansion’s appeal is that it hasn’t been over-restored, and some areas, including the façade of the property, remain in an atmospheric state of arrested decay.
Accommodation is in seven individually decorated, simple yet tastefully furnished rooms with an ensuite bathroom. While some rooms are designed to overlook the courtyard and the gardens, others offer lovely views of Shatrunjaya Hill. At Vijay Vilas Palace, tasty, home-cooked Gujarati Indian cuisine is served in the main dining room, and whilst this is a modest hotel that lacks the facilities of a modern hotel – it makes up for old-world charm.
