Ladakh: where to visit
When to travel
June to September is the best time to visit Ladakh. The days are warm, and the skies are clear, allowing you to explore Ladakh and enjoy the stunning views. This is also when vibrant annual festivals are held at various ancient monasteries, including the renowned Hemis and Phyang monasteries near Leh. For wildlife enthusiasts, December to February is perfect for searching for snow leopards.
Insider tip
Visit the sacred Thiksey Monastery at dawn and observe monks chant Buddhist mantras to the accompaniment of traditional musical instruments, including conch shells and cymbals. Soak up the mystical atmosphere that pervades this ancient monastery and enjoy the outstanding views.
Luxury Indulgence
Experience an evening of serene luxury at the enchanting Sumur dunes. As the sun sets over this remote, high-altitude desert, immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of your surroundings. Reflect on your journey while enjoying chilled beers with spicy samosas and crispy poppadoms – a magical moment in the heart of the high-altitude desert wilderness.
Travel differently
Climb onto a double-hump Bactrian camel and enjoy a short ride across the Hundar dunes. Trace the path of Silk Route traders and explorers who once played a pivotal role in the Great Game.
Room with a view
Drink in the outstanding views of the mighty Karakoram mountains from the private sit-out of your stylish room at the family-owned, boutique-style Kyagar Hotel in the Nubra Valley.
Savour
Ladakh’s traditional cuisine is a distinct blend of Tibetan and Kashmiri flavours. Must-tries include momos (steamed dumplings) filled with meat or vegetables, thukpa, a comforting noodle soup and skyu (a thick stew with pasta) and khambir, a traditional Ladakhi sourdough bread. Don’t miss out on butter tea, a traditional drink made with yak butter, and chhang, a local barley beer.
Be adventurous
Embark on an exhilarating white-water rafting adventure down the Zanskar River. Conquer Type-1 and Type-2 rapids as you navigate through the dramatic Zanskar Valley, surrounded by rugged, towering mountains.
Go wild
Visit the Tso Moriri Conservation Reserve, home to the endangered Tibetan gazelle, Bharal (Himalayan blue sheep), the majestic Great Tibetan sheep and Tibetan sand foxes, amongst other wildlife. This reserve is also home to aggressive wild yaks.
Combine with
Combine a private tour of Ladakh with a visit to the Taj Mahal. Alternatively, a short stay in the UAE is perfect for some R&R.
