Fujairah & The East Coast

Characterised by dramatic mountains, picturesque oases, historic forts, and the glittering waters of the Gulf of Oman, a visit to the Hajar mountains and the UAE’s East Coast offers an enticing opportunity to get off the beaten track and discover some of the emirates’ most notable scenic and historical attractions.

A 4WD safari from Dubai to the mountain resort of Hatta, with its Heritage Village, rugged peaks and cool natural water pools, is one of the best ways to uncover some of the secrets of the Hajar. Alternatively, you might wish to overnight off the beaten track at the Damani Lodges Resort or the JA Hatta Fort Hotel. Another chance to enjoy this impressive range is on an excursion to the mountainous emirate of Fujairah on the East Coast. This journey showcases a little-seen UAE that is worlds away from 21st-century Dubai and Abu Dhabi. En route, stop at the small mountain village of Al Bithna with its extensive oasis of date palms and 18th-century fort, or make the short detour to the isolated and picturesque valley of Al Hayl where a charming 17th-century fort, watchtower, and abandoned village are to be found.

For a further sense of the history of the East Coast, visit the city of Fujairah’s museum which contains artefacts dating back to 1500 BC, and Fujairah’s mighty 16th-century castle. To the south are the steamy mangrove forests of Khor Kalba (a popular destination for kayakers and birders), while at Al Bidya to the north, is the site of the oldest mosque in the UAE – a small peaceful domed building dating from the 15th century. Beyond, at Dibba, are some of the East Coast’s finest beaches. The Address Fujairah is located directly on the sea and is the most comfortable place to stay on the UAE’s East Coast.
