Sumahan on the Water
Hotel category
Deluxe
A former Ottoman distillery, turned award winning design hotel, Sumahan on the Water offers sensational Bosphorus views from its secluded waterfront location in Cengelkoy on the Asian shore. Named after the unadulterated ‘suma’ spirit used to make Turkey’s favourite alcoholic drink raki, this small family run property is the creation of Turkish-American owner-architects Nedret and Mark Butler. Well thought-out ultra modern design with clean lines and contemporary furniture characterise the hotel’s soothing interiors, while at the same time making a feature of the ever-changing Bosphorus panoramas. Every one of Sumahan on the Water’s 24 stylish and minimalist rooms and suites overlooks the water and has either Queen sized or twin beds along with a luxurious marble bathroom. The duplex Loft Suites have a separate living area and are the only room category with direct access to the hotel’s waterfront terrace. Leisure facilities at the hotel include a gym, massage rooms, and hammam (though no swimming pool). When it comes to relaxation there are few more pleasant locations than Sumahan on the Water’s terrace fromwhere you can hear the sound of the Bosphorus lapping on the quay. Dining is available at either the Waterfront Cafe or Tapasuma. Alternatively, take a short stroll into Cengelkoy (a neighbourhood that still preserves its village feel) with its cafes, fish restaurants and waterfront promenade.
