Dar el Medina

Modest
Located deep within Tunis’ impressive medieval medina (old city), and within easy walking distance of the souqs and monuments, Dar el Medina is a traditional courtyard style house and former home of a 19th century Ottoman official. The property has been carefully converted into a boutique hotel with 12 ensuite and air-conditioned rooms all of which are equipped with television, complimentary Wifi and mini bar. On passing through the iron gated entrance from the medina you enter an oasis of calm and tranquilly built around two court-yards, off which (and above) the hotel’s bedrooms and public areas are arranged. Dar el Medina’s grand guest reception hall features lavishly decorated white stucco arches, rich sofas and heavy curtains. This oriental feel is continued in the reception where old family photographs and antiques are on display. Aside from these public rooms, it must be noted that this is not a lavishly themed house with elaborate interior features as you might find in Morocco, but has a simpler and arguably more original look. Decorative features found in the rooms include traditional Tunisian rugs and cushions, tiled walls, and traditional furniture that give them a simple character look rather than an opulent feel. Breakfast is served in a cosy ground floor room, while Dar el Medina’s roof top terrace has wonderful views over the old city and is a fantastic place to sit and relax at the end of a busy day walking through the souqs. Dar el Medina does not have its own restaurant, but is within five minutes walk of a number of excellent dining choices including the renowned Dar el Jeld.
