The Meroe & Ancient Sudan tour is privately guided throughout and will take you on an adventure from the confluence of the Blue and White Nile at Khartoum to reveal Sudan’s fascinating ancient history as well as its incredibly beautiful and pristine desert landscapes. The legacy of the Pharaohs of Kush, Meroe’s steep sided pyramids emerge like shark’s teeth from amongst the golden dunes and are rightly held to be Sudan’s premier archaeological attraction; but we have no doubt that visitors will be equally awed by the first capital of the Kushite kingdom at Jebel Barkal: a holy mountain that was believed to be the mound of all creation by the ancients. Nearby, are stunning dark-hued pyramids at Nuri and the richly decorated funerary chambers at El Kurru. Further north along the River Nile, the Meroe & Ancient Sudan tour will reveal the amazingly ancient Deffufas of the Kerma Culture as well as the kushite quarry at Tombos where a statue of the once mighty pharaoh Taharqa now lies abandoned in the dust. After crossing the virtually waterless Bayuda Desert you will spend two nights at Meroe giving you ample time to photograph the stunning pyramids in the morning and evening light. From Meroe you’ll also visit the important and well preserved late Kushite sites of Naga and Musawwarat es-Sufra where you will come face to face with the great lion-god Apedemak.
