The UNESCO World Heritage town of Galle, located at the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka, is an ancient town with a fascinating maritime history. Take a walk around the ramparts for a fascinating insight into the quaint walled town with its maze of narrow streets, fine collection of buildings, and diverse architectural styles dating back through the centuries. Admire the ancient churches, the lighthouse, and the great warehouse (presently housing the National Maritime Museum); then proceed to one of the street side cafes to experience Sri Lankan street food. The 17th century Dutch Fort, which was originally built by the Portuguese, is the best-preserved fort in Sri Lanka and is perched on a promontory. Galle is also an excellent gateway to some of the secluded, laid-back beaches and fishing villages (including Thalpe) that lie to the south and offer chic, boutique hotels away from the madding crowd. Galle’s palm fringed coastline, with its upmarket beach hotel and boutique hotels within the fort itself, is one of the most developed areas in Sri Lanka. Relatively easy access to Colombo International Airport gives the visitor the option to begin their holiday in Galle for a slow and gentle introduction to Sri Lanka, or finish in style before flying home.
Once a key trading hub, the 17th century Dutch built Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Galle's main attraction.
Lunuganga is a tropical garden and was originally the country residence of Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka's most famous architect.
