Perched on the banks of Koggala Lake, Villa Modarawatta is an 150-year-old ‘Walauwa’ (manor house) that enjoys a picturesque setting near the historic town of Galle and is an affordable, character-rich converted hotel that is popular amongst families as well as couples. Lovingly refurbished, this four-bedroom villa is set amongst two acres of swaying coconut palms and mature flowering plants and is built in traditional style featuring serene courtyards, large verandas, timber roofs. All the four individually decorated rooms have retained their old-world charm and tastefully furnished with a four-poster antique Dutch period bed draped in mosquito netting, an overhead ceiling fan and a modern ensuite bathroom, while Sri Lankan artworks adorn the walls. While the two super-deluxe rooms are more spacious and open out to private verandahs overlooking the gardens; the two Deluxe Rooms are relatively smaller in size and open out on to the central courtyard. At Villa Modarawattha both Sri Lankan and western continental cuisine is served and guests can choose to either eat in the main dining room or on the verandah opening out to the garden or under the shade of a Frangipani tree in the garden. Other facilities at Villa Modarawattha include a spacious living room with a small library and where guests can enjoy pre-dinner drinks, an outdoor pool set overlooking the Koggala Lake and a garden pavilion where guests can enjoy a relaxing Ayurvedic massage. Should you wish to book an Ayurvedic massage, please advise the resident manager at least 24 hours in advance, as the services are provided by qualified practitioners who live in and around the area. Guests staying at Villa Modarwattha should be aware that there is a southern railway train line nearby, and whilst the occasional train that slowly trundles through briefly disturbs the serene setting – it does add to the unique atmosphere.
