The Last House
Hotel category
Superior
Celebrated as the last residential project of Sri Lanka’s renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, The Last House is a comfortable, intimate, and charming hotel set on Mahawella beach near the town of Tangalle on Sri Lanka’s famed south coast. Surrounded by a lagoon on one side and turquoise blue Indian Ocean on the other, The Last House, is tastefully decorated and has a signature Bawa verandah running around it. The main house features a 3-bedroom suite that is best booked as an entire unit - although it is possible to book individual rooms. There are also three spacious elegantly furnished rooms set within the grounds of the property. Although the suite and the rooms are equipped with only an overhead ceiling fan, Bawa’s signature design feature, an interplay between indoor and outdoor spaces, ensures that the natural breeze flows through the property and guests usually do not notice the absence of air-conditioning. Food at the Last House is a combination of Sri Lankan and Western cuisine - fresh and wholesome seafood dominates the menu. Leisure facilities include a large outdoor swimming pool and gardens. With advance notice yoga classes and relaxing massages can be arranged. Guests should be aware that The Last House does not have an alcohol licence.
