A historic island at the mouth of Trincomalee Bay, the Sober Island Resort is a hidden gem owned and managed by the Sri Lankan Navy that is a must see for anyone with an interest in naval or military history. Sober Island’s great strategic significance led its being fortified as a military base by the colonial powers. Following restoration by the Sri Lankan Navy, some of Sober Island’s derelict military buildings have been converted into a unique, though modest, eleven room hotel. Surrounded by thick shrubs and jungle, the spacious, air-conditioned rooms and chalets are simply furnished with ensuite facilities. The former officer’s mess is now an elegant bar and dining area with fine views of the harbour. Facilities include an outdoor pool, tennis court and gym. While on Sober Island you may discover the gun batteries, ammunition storage facilities and watchtowers that are quickly being engulfed by the jungle, as well as snorkel in one of the beautiful coves. Guests staying on the island have privileged access to Trincomalee’s Maritime Museum. Peaceful and tranquil during the day, the call of the jungle takes over the island at night – a stay at the Sober Island Resort is a unique experience. Transport to and from the island is by a shuttle service operated by the Navy.
