The Elephant Stables Lodge was originally the ‘wallawwa’ (manor house) of Sir Cudah Ratwatte, a Sri Lankan nobleman, and is located on a hillock overlooking the town of Kandy. Until relatively recently, the gardens of the manor house served as stables for the elephants owned by the family! The house has since been converted into a small, boutique hotel with six rooms decorated with Kandyan artefacts and featuring essential modern comforts including iPad docking stations. The Colonial Wing in the original main house has two charming suites and a deluxe room, while the New Wing, offers two rooms. The cottage suite, set in the gardens and with easy access to the swimming pool, is a spacious freestanding two bedroom suite that is ideal for families. The ground floor of the main house has been converted into a spacious living room while the ground floor of the New Wing is a purpose-built lounge serving guests iced tea and fresh juices. A selection of traditional Sri Lankan and Western cuisine is served either in the main indoor dining room or on the verandah overlooking the gardens. Other facilities at The Elephant Stables Lodge include an outdoor swimming pool and a small reading room with an interesting collection of books on Sri Lanka.
