Fort Hammenhiel

Perched on a small rocky island, surrounded by a lagoon, Fort Hammenhiel, is a 17th century Dutch Fort located 45 minutes’ drive from Jaffna. This Octagonal shaped fort, and one time prison, has been converted into a simple unique heritage hotel and is managed by the Sri Lankan Navy. Reached by a ten minute boat journey, Fort Hammenhiel retains many of its original features including ramparts, tunnels, a central courtyard flanked by storage vaults, and prison cells. Guests are received on the island in traditional Dutch style with a bugle call by Sri Lankan naval personnel wearing historic Dutch uniforms. Accommodation is in four ensuite rooms that were once barracks. The simply furnished, air-conditioned rooms, set above the prison cells on the second level of the fort, overlook either the central courtyard or open out to a small garden courtyard with Margosa trees. On the fort’s third level, a sun deck offers glorious views of the sun rise and set. Guests staying at Fort Hammenhiel, should be aware that there isn’t a restaurant or bar on the island. Sri Lankan food and drinks are served at the hotel’s restaurant in Karaitivu across the lagoon (a naval launch is available on demand). While Fort Hammenhiel lacks facilities, we feel that this is more than compensated by the hotel’s unique character.
