Built over 100 years ago, the grand Chettinadu Mansion is amongst the largest of the approximate 3000 mansions in the Chettinad district and is located in Kanadukathan, a settlement that has been declared a Heritage Village by the Government of India. Designed in the distinctive Chettinad style of architecture, Chettinadu Mansion was once home to an extended Chettiar family until its conversion into a boutique hotel in the early 2000s . Chettinadu Mansion’s beautiful interiors feature high ceilinged rooms and lounges with finely carved ornate doors, Burmese teakwood columns, Italian marble-tiled floors and wrought-iron pillars from Birmingham. The gleaming walls of the mansion are lined with a mixture of egg white and lime that has lasted for decades whilst giving them a sheen and keeping the mansion cool even in summer. Accommodation is offered in twelve spacious, air-conditioned rooms decorated in traditional style with antique and period-style furniture. Rooms in the main block have balconies. The hotel serves authentic Chettinad cuisine based on family recipes and offers guests the option to take meals either in the grand dining room with its ornate teakwood pillars or on the veranda. Leisure facilities at the Chettinadu Mansion include an outdoor pool and an Ayurveda centre, while activities include cooking lessons focusing on the distinct Chettinad cuisine, and bullock cart rides through the village.
