Culturally distinct and historically an important trading centre, Gujarat is a land of incredible diversity and is an ideal holiday destination for the second time visitor to India. Gujarat, steeped in history, is a treasure trove of fascinating archaeological sites; thriving rural communities that nurture centuries-old arts and crafts; abandoned ruined forts; modest yet charming palaces and lush forests that provide shelter to the endangered Asiatic Lion as well as other wildlife. Often overlooked, a visit to Gujarat offers many unforgettable immersive experiences. Most travellers begin their journey in the bustling metropolis of Ahmedabad with a guided walk for an introductory immersion into vibrant Gujarati culture. Ahmedabad is also an excellent base to visit the exquisite 11th century Modhera Sun Temple, regarded as one the finest examples of Solanki architecture and the striking 15th century Rani-Ki-Vav stepwell at Patan. Lying in the north-west corner of Gujarat, the Rann of Kutch is defined by the stunningly flat snow-white salt marsh and the thriving Kutchi people, who are regarded as some of the finest craftsmen in this part of the world. Here, observe master weavers create intricate patterns on fabric, before learning to design your own block-printed shawl. From here, a short drive to the Gulf of Kutch will bring you to the small seaside town of Mandvi. Once a bustling seaport, today, Mandvi offers comfortable accommodation along virtually deserted beaches and is ideal for guests who want to combine R&R with birdwatching at nearby Mandvi Creek that attracts many migratory species including flamingos during the winter months. In the heart of the Saurashtra peninsula, at Gondal experience the lifestyle of the 19th century Maharajas and at Junagadh discover magnificent Indo-Islamic style monuments including the ornate 19th century Mahabat Maqbara Tomb and the crumbling Uparkot Fort. Travelling further south visit the Sasan Gir National Park, the last surviving habitat for the Asiatic Lion and climb up the sacred Shatrunjaya Hill to visit the splendid Jain Temples at Palitana. For those who would like to tease out some of the lesser known gems as well on their visit to Gujarat – combining a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage listed Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, which is studded with pre-Mughal monuments with an afternoon tour of the 19th century Lukshmi Villas Palace in the heart of Baroda – the largest private residence in India and about four times the size of Buckingham Palace - will be thoroughly rewarding.
Combine a visit to the historic walled city of Ahmedabad with the princely states of Baroda (Vadodara) and Junagadh and discover lesser-known archaeological sites showcasing a stunning collection of pre-Mughal Islamic architecture.
Search for the endangered Asiatic Lion in their last remaining natural habitat at Sasan Gir National Park.
Climb up to the summit of the sacred Shatrunjai Hill and marvel at the glistening Jain Temples that were built over a period of 900 years and renowned for their architectural splendour.
