Where to Travel in NORTH INDIA 

India’s soul lives in her villages. A journey through rural Rajasthan will take you off the beaten track and enable you to feel the pulse of this most magical of Indian regions with its vivid colours, traditional lifestyles, and charming heritage hotels. Known as the largest open-air gallery in Rajasthan, the Shekhawati is known for its hundreds of 19th century frescoed mansions (merchant houses) and slower pace of life. To the southwest, Nagaur is dominated by the 12th century Ahichattragarh Fort and is the focal point of the atmospheric World Sufi Spirit festival that is held every February. A westbound drive through the great Thar Desert reveals Jaisalmer’s historic ‘Golden Fortress’ – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Separating the sweeping sand dunes of western Rajasthan from the picturesque lakeside town of Dungarpur are two delightful Rajasthani pearls: Narlai and Jawai Bandh. The former is close to the exquisite Jain Temple complex at Ranakpur, while the latter offering the enticing prospect of luxury living while searching for leopards! The scenic town of Dungarpur, which lies to the south of Udaipur, is a tranquil base for nature walks, soft treks and acts as a gateway to the state of Gujarat. To the north-east, Bhainsrorgarh is a fortified outpost perched dramatically above the Chambal River and offers river safaris as well as day-trips to Kipling’s Bundi - famed for its crumbling palace filled with murals and frescoes. Lying between here and Ranthambore – Rajasthan’s famed tiger reserve - is the delightful oasis village of Shahpura where the visitor can immerse themselves into rural village life while enjoying a homestay with the local rulers. Tucked away in the Aravalli Hills, Samode offers has a beautiful 150-year-old converted-palace and is an easily accessible from Jaipur. When it comes to witnessing an explosion of local life, few towns can compete with sacred Pushkar where an unforgettable camel fair is held every autumn.
