Originally the private residence of the Maharaja of Darbanga, the charming Brijrama Palace is an 18th century royal residence on the banks of the sacred Ganges and is only steps away from the famous Dasashwamedh Ghat, where the Ganga ‘Aarti’ is held every evening. For those who are looking for an immersive cultural experience, this converted-hotel is ideal as it undeniably enjoys a superb location and comes with its own private ‘Ghat’ (stone steps that lead you down to the River). Lovingly restored over a period of ten years, the Brijrama Palace still retains much of its original charm and features hand-painted ceilings embellished with gold leaf, murals, beautiful stone carvings and a central courtyard surrounded by ornate sandstone pillars. The hotel can only be accessed from the river – arriving at the hotel by traditional wooden boat is an experience in itself. Accommodation at Brijrama Palace is in 32 rooms and suites, which are comfortably furnished and tastefully decorated using traditional Indian fabrics. The hotel’s main restaurant serves delicious Indian and Continental Vegetarian cuisine, while traditional thandai (chilled almond-flavoured beverage) and freshly brewed teas along with finger food are served in the lounge that offers superb views of the Ganges. Activities on offer include early morning yoga sessions at the rooftop terrace, which offers breathtaking views of the river and the old City. Also, the rooftop terrace is undoubtedly the best place to soak up the atmosphere and witness the faithful devotees offering prayers to the rising sun. Guests should be aware that Brijrama Palace does not serve alcohol and offers only vegetarian cuisine.
