Deluxe
Perched on a cliff, Ahilya Fort is a charming 18th century retreat that enjoys a stunning setting in Maheshwar on the banks of the sacred Narmada River. An ideal base for those seeking authentic cultural immersions in rural central India, Ahilya Fort is built in traditional Maratha style and was formerly the residence of Holkar kings before being converted into an intimate, atmospheric hotel, where couples and families alike can enjoy the relaxed unostentatious and homely atmosphere. Within the massive walls of the fort is a splendid maze of white-washed building, lush gardens, beautiful courtyards and hidden terraces. A stay at Ahilya Fort is a unique experience and offers guests the opportunity to discover a colourful and little known corner of India where time has largely stood still. The temples and markets of Maheshwar, which is considered to be ‘Varanasi of central India’, are on your door-step; and the stunning sites of Mandu and Omkareshwar are only a short drive away. Another highlight is a sunset boat trip on the Narmada River. Accommodation at Ahilya Fort is in 13 individually designed rooms and suites that are spread out between seven buildings. No two rooms are of the same size and whilst some are compact, they all are stylishly furnished with hand-made furniture, feature ensuite bathrooms (shower only) and overlook either the gardens or the river. Whilst some rooms are air-conditioned, others have air-coolers. Hot water bottles are supplied during winter months. One of the more recent additions at Ahilya Fort is the Royal Tent, which has its own private garden, plunge pool and offers glorious views of river as well as the surrounding temples. All meals; house wines and beer during lunch and dinner; and soft drinks, tea and coffee are included while in residence as are some excursions. Leisure facilities at Ahilya Fort include an outdoor pool and a massage room.
