Situated in Patan, one of the Kathmandu Valley’s three royal cities, The Inn is ideal for those seeking a boutique guest house experience is a quieter part of the city. Built out of red brick and timber and beautifully restored by conservation architect Rohit Ranjitkar, the 100-year-old Newari house retains many of its original features, The sympathetic renovation provides the comforts of a modern hotel with all the charm of an older building. Located in the heart of UNESCO-listed Patan Durbar Square, a stay at The Inn provides an opportunity to explore the local lifestyle, and historical architecture. The ten and suites rooms are set around a traditional courtyard and are individual in design. Many feature high ceilings with wooden beams and have been decorated with traditional Nepalese fabrics and carpets. The rustic style dining room serves up delicious Nepalese and Newari cuisine. Some points to note: rooms are not air-conditioned nor are they centrally heated, although fans, and heaters and electric blankets are provided seasonally. Hot water is provided by solar energy, although there is a backup generator. Finally, tall travellers should be aware that Newari homes often have low doorways. Furthermore, some travellers find the sound insulation is not as effective as they’d like in older buildings of this nature. Despite these shortcomings, The Inn at Patan maintains very favourable feedback from guests who enjoy a more intimate experience.
