The Old Inn Bandipur
Hotel category
Modest
Originally a Newari townhouse, The Old Inn Bandipur is a simple converted guesthouse with character. Perched high above the Trisuli Valley, this painstakingly restored mansion still retains its old-world charm and is set within the main square in Old Bandipur, where no motorised vehicles are allowed even today. With traditional carved doors, shuttered windows, exposed beams, low-ceilinged corridors, wooden staircases, tiled floors and local artwork, this is a fairly large and rambling, maze-like property that showcases many of its original features and has a relaxed homespun atmosphere. The simply furnished rooms are tastefully decorated in traditional Nepali style, but no two rooms are of the same size or décor and it must be noted that as this is an old mansion the rooms are rather compact. While rooms in the new wing come with a private ensuite bathroom (more like a snug, functional wet room with a western-style loo and a shower); in the old wing there is a loo and a shower on each floor that is shared between rooms. Also, whilst all rooms in the new wing are set overlooking the square, some rooms in the old wing do not have any windows and others are set overlooking the courtyard. At the Old Inn Bandipur, for breakfasts guests can choose either Continental or traditional Nepali food, but lunches and dinners are usually local Newari-style cuisine. Meals are usually served in the main dining room, but if weather permits guests can dine at the roof-top terrace as well that offers stunning views of the Annapura mountain range. Whilst there is no bar, they do serve beer as well as wine. With cosy nooks, comfortable chairs and a large open fire, which is lit on cold winter evenings, this simple hotel offers guests plenty of space to relax and appreciate the peaceful atmosphere. Guests staying at this hotel must be aware that the rooms are not air-conditioned ane during winter the friendly staff will provide an electric blanket. Despite the lack of facilities, this hotel is perfect for those looking to go beyond the usual tourist trail and is conveniently located between Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan. Activities on offer include village walk as well as an easy / moderate hike to the Magar village of Ramkot, showcasing local farming methods and stunning views. The 4-hour walk to the Siddha Cave is also worth considering to see Nepal's largest cave.
