Hayat Zaman is the place to stay in Petra if you are looking for a character hotel with an authentic Jordanian feel. Located on a hillside offering magnificent views over the sandstone Shara Hills that surround ancient Petra, Hayat Zaman is ten minutes’ drive from ancient Petra and has been created from an abandoned traditional 19th century Jordanian village. While the hotel is isolated, and is certainly not the most comfortable place to stay in Petra, the opportunity to get away from the chain hotels that are a feature of much of Jordan has an undeniable appeal. Each of the air-conditioned guestrooms is unique in design and décor and has been created from an old village cottage. Rough-hewn stone walls, Bedouin themed furnishings and locally made rugs contribute to the local charm. Hayat Zaman’s restaurant is located just off the former village’s main square which is a particularly enjoyable place to relax on a warm evening. Another feature of the property is its authentic hammam (Turkish Bath). There is also a (seasonal) outdoor swimming-pool.
