Known as the Iranian Cappadocia, the small troglodytic settlement of Kandovan village is an hour’s drive to the south of Tabriz and is the location of one of Iran’s most unusual, atmospheric and delightful properties – the Laleh International Rocky Hotel Kandovan. Resembling a giant termite colony, the hotel has been hewn from the soft volcanic tuft and offers accommodation in 16 comfortable large cave rooms (some with Jacuzzi) that have been attractively decorated in a minimalist style with local rugs. All rooms are equipped with ensuite bathrooms, Wi-Fi, flat screen televisions, tea and coffee making facilities and underfloor heating. Atmospheric exposed rocky walls are a feature throughout the hotel. The thick natural walls are perfect for temperature regulation and keep you cool in summer and insulated in winter. Dining at the hotel is offered at the tastefully decorated cave restaurant which serves traditional Iranian cuisine. At breakfast time don’t forget to sample the delicious local Kandovan honey! The property is an ideal base from which to go for walks in the magical surrounding landscape and discover the charm of Kandovan village after the day-trippers have departed. Potential guests should be aware that it is necessary to negotiate a large number of stairs in order to reach the rooms or restaurant making the Laleh International Rocky Hotel Kandovan unsuitable for those with mobility difficulties.
