Jordan: Suggested Tours

Today land at Amman International Airport under your own arrangements (We recommend the flights offered by BMI from London Heathrow). On arrival you will be met by a Corinthian Travel representative, assisted with the immigration formalities, and then transferred to your chosen hotel.

This morning drive to ancient Jerash, one of the best preserved Roman cities in the Middle East. Here tour the ruins including the distinctive elliptical forum with its beautiful Ionic colonnade, Hadrian’s Arch, the Hippodrome and the Temple of Artemis – the site’s most splendid monument. Following a home cooked Jordanian lunch drive to the photogenic castle of Ajlun. Built by Saladin’s cousin Izz ad-Din Usama in the late 12th century to check Crusader expansion from the west, it is a rare example of a wholly Islamic castle.

Following breakfast drive into the black basalt desert to the east of Amman to visit the ‘Desert Castles’ dating from Roman and Umayyad times of Qasr Amra, Qasr Kharana and Azraq. This afternoon visit the Jordanian capital which was known as Philadelphia during the Roman period. The tour will give you a taste for life in modern Jordan and will include the ancient Citadel, the old souqs and the Roman theatre.

After breakfast drive to Mt. Nebo, from where Moses first saw the Promised Land. The church here has fine mosaics and commands wonderful views over the Dead Sea. Close by in the bustling market town of Madaba you will have a short walking tour. The town is noted for its Ottoman houses and detailed Byzantine mosaics, including a historically significant 6th century mosaic map. After lunch drive to Mukawir, a fortress of Herod the Great which commands fine views over the Dead Sea, then continue to Ma’in.

Today will be at leisure in Ma’in. Lying 264-meters below sea level, the Evason Ma’in Hot Springs hotel is set in dramatic terrain and is an ideal place to relax for a day mid-tour. The hotel’s focal point is the classically designed Six Senses Spa which sits directly under one of the natural hot springs waterfalls that cascades into the main pool and relaxation area.

This morning journey south to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Umm ar-Rasas (ancient Kastron Mefaa), a fortified city that was an important frontier station. The Church of St Stephen is the main attraction and contains a very large, perfectly preserved mosaic floor laid down in 718 A.D. Next, continue to Kerak along the ancient Kings Highway. On arrival visit Kerak’s huge Crusader and Mamluk castle. This afternoon drive to Petra stopping en route at Beida (Little Petra), a beautiful foretaste of the main Nabataean site.

Start the day with a privately guided tour of ancient Petra lasting between 2 to 3 hours. The site is approached via the Siq, a dramatic narrow gorge of striking beauty hemmed in by cliffs up to 80 metres in height. After 1.5 kilometres the stunning edifice of the Treasury (El Khazneh) emerges dramatically through a narrow gap. Further on the intricately carved Royal Tombs, Street of the Facades, High Place of Sacrifice, Qasr al Bint and the enormous Monastery (El Deir) all wait to be discovered. A buffet lunch will be provided within the site. The afternoon is free to continuing exploring Petra independently. This evening experience the unforgettable spectacle of Petra by Candlenight (operates Mon, Wed, Thu only) when the Siq and forecourt of the Treasury are bathed in the soft flickering light of thousands of candles.

A second day to explore Petra (unguided, entrance fee included).

Today drive south to explore the stunning desert valley of Wadi Rum, a place that T.E Lawrence (of Arabia) famously described as “Vast, echoing, and God-like”. This is vast timeless and starkly beautiful place where uniquely shaped mountains rise out of the rose-red desert. Rum was the location for many shots in David Lean’s epic film ’Lawrence of Arabia’. On arrival you will have a 4WD tour of the desert followed by a private lunch in a Bedouin tent. This afternoon continue your desert exploration with a private guided walking tour, then check-in at your campsite. This evening dinner will be under the stars.

This morning rise early to watch the rosy fingers of dawn creep across the desert. For a supplement it is possible to see the sunrise over the desert on an unforgettable hot-air balloon flight. Following breakfast at your camp drive north to the banks of the River Jordan. Here visit the hugely significant biblical site of Bethany where Jesus of Nazareth was baptised, and where he gathered his first disciples, then check-in at your hotel on the shores of the Dead Sea.
