Agatha Christie’s Egypt attempts to do just that through combining a leisurely Dahabiya Nile cruise with a classic journey from Cairo to Abu Simbel that features the country’s grand fin de siècle hotels. In doing so, the tour seeks to re-capture the spirit of Egyptian travel that existed in the 19th and early 20th centuries; a more elegant age when privileged travellers journeyed in style through Egypt to discover the beauty and stunning archaeological sites of this ancient land. Dahabiyas: twin-masted sailing yachts with 4 to 8 cabins were the preferred mode of Nile transport for ‘grand tourists’ up to 100 years ago, and have been likened to the ‘Riads’ of the Nile. A singular attraction of a Dahabiya cruise is that it allows you and a small group of fellow travellers to sail on the Nile at a leisurely pace largely removed from the hustle and bustle of modern touring. En route, your Dahabiya will visit small islands, local villages, and Pharaonic sites that are often missed by the larger Nile cruises, enabling you to experience an Egypt that has long been removed from the tourist radar. ‘Our’ deluxe modern Dahabiyas pay homage to those of old yet feature luxurious modern comforts including: air-conditioned cabins; spacious sun-decks; large hot-tub Jacuzzis; à la carte dining; and an impressive crew to guest ratio. Complimenting the old world charm of the Dahabiya cruise, are nights spent at Egypt’s grand palace hotels; including the luxurious Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan, where Agatha Christie is said to have written ‘Death on the Nile.’ Private transfers are included throughout; sightseeing in Cairo and Luxor is privately guided; excursions from the Dahabiya cruise and at Abu Simbel are on a shared basis.
